Sixth Formers Explore the Story of Communication at The Postal Museum
On 20th November, 6th form students enjoyed an engaging and educational trip to The Postal Museum — a visit that proved to be both highly successful and well attended, with the majority of sixth formers taking part.
The day offered students and staff a unique opportunity to trace the remarkable evolution of the British postal system. Exhibits charted the journey from the very first messengers — the post boys who carried post on foot for Henry VIII, across his kingdom in 1512 — all the way to the sophisticated mail networks of today.
A highlight for many was the chance to experience the historic Mail Rail, the miniature underground railway that once quietly transported letters beneath London’s streets. Students learned how this remarkable engineering achievement kept the country connected, even during wartime and major city disruptions.
The visit also explored the role of the postal service in modern media, with interactive displays showcasing Royal Mail in popular culture, from film and television to fashion and design.
Overall, the trip was an informative and memorable experience, giving students a deeper appreciation of how the postal system has shaped communication in Britain for more than 500 years.
